Does Handarin work offline?
Yes. Every phrase, native-audio recording, hanzi and travel tip is stored on your device, so the app works in airplane mode and behind the Great Firewall. The only feature that uses the internet is fetching live exchange rates for the yuan converter — and if there is no connection, a bundled offline rate table is used instead.
Which devices does Handarin run on?
Handarin runs on iPhone with iOS 16.0 or later (App Store) and on Android phones with Android 8.0 or later (Google Play). Both versions are built from the same shared core, so they include exactly the same phrases, audio, hanzi, tips and converter.
The audio does not play — what can I check?
On iPhone, check the silent switch first: Handarin plays audio through the normal media channel, but a very low media volume can make it seem muted. On Android, check the media volume slider and that Do Not Disturb is not silencing media. On both, open Settings inside the app to see the selected voice (female or male). If a specific phrase stays silent while others play, write to us with the phrase and we will fix it.
What does Handarin Pro include? Is it a subscription?
No subscription. Handarin Pro is a one-time purchase: you pay once and it is yours forever. It unlocks all phrases in every category, the interactive number phrases, and the HSK 2 and 3 hanzi with their writing guides. The free version always keeps a core set of phrases, travel tips and every HSK 1 character.
I bought Pro but the content is locked
Open Settings › Restore purchases inside the app. Purchases are tied to the store account you bought with — your Apple Account on iOS, your Google account on Android — so after reinstalling or switching to a new phone a restore brings Pro back at no cost. Make sure you are signed in with the same account you used to buy, and contact us if the problem persists.
I bought Pro on iPhone — do I get it on Android too?
Each store handles its own purchases, so a Pro purchase made on the App Store unlocks Pro on iOS, and one made on Google Play unlocks it on Android. There is no cross-store transfer: Apple and Google do not share purchase records with each other or with us.
Can I change the app language?
Handarin's interface is available in 14 languages and follows your system language by default. You can override it in Settings inside the app. Phrase translations and travel tips are available in 12+ languages.
Are the travel tips up to date?
The 59 tips cover the things that actually surprise first-time visitors — visas, mobile payments (Alipay/WeChat Pay), high-speed trains, VPNs, common scams and etiquette — and we review them with every release. If you spot something that has changed on the ground, tell us and we will update it.

Privacy
Handarin does not collect personal data, has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. Everything you do in the app stays on your device. The full details are in our privacy policy.
